Kuwait beat UAE in GCC Wheelchair Basketball Champ’ship – ‘Tournament aims to develop players skills’

ABU DHABI, Dec 21, (KUNA): Kuwait beat the United Arab Emirates (UAE) 49-47 in the opening of the The 8th GCC Wheelchair Basketball Championship, held at New York University in Abu Dhabi.

Kuwait won the first and second quarters, but the home team had a 15-11 lead in the third quarter, but Kuwait narrowly escaped defeat to win the last quarter and the game.

Tonight’s win is crucially important because Kuwait beat the home favorite, Shafi Al-Hajri, President of Kuwait Disabled Sport Club, told KUNA in a statement. Coach Hussam Mahmoud said the game was tough for both sides.

Veteran Kuwaiti player Nezar Ramadhan said his teammates were eager to win the title for the 8th time in a row. Kuwait won all previous championships. The 8th GCC Wheelchair Basketball Championship will develop skills of Gulf players in order to qualify for international championships, chairman of organizing committee Mohammad Al-Hamly said Tuesday.

Al-Hamly, addressing the opening ceremony of the championship, said the tournament aimed at opening new horizons for the Gulf wheelchair basketball players at Arab, Asian and international levels. He thanked everyone who contributed to the holding of the championship, which would create suitable competing environment for the players.

Teams from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are competing in the championship.
