Kuwait 128th in gender gap

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 26, (Agencies): Kuwait ranked 128th out of 144 countries with a score of 0.624 in the 2016 Global Gender Gap Index released by the World Economic Forum Tuesday. The index ranks countries according to how well they are leveraging their female talent pool with the following indicators — economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.
Kuwait ranked 125th with a score of 0.520 in economic participation and opportunity, 47th with a score of 0.997 in educational attainment, 136th with a score of 0.957 in health and survival, and 140th with a score of 0.022 in political empowerment.
On the ranking of other GCC countries, Qatar landed on the 119th spot in the Global Index with a score of 0.643, 97th with a score of 0.619 in economic participation and opportunity, 92nd with a score of 0.982 in educational attainment, 136th with a score of 0.957 in health and survival, and 144th with a score of 0.013 in political empowerment.
United Arab Emirates (UAE) ranked 124th spot in the Global Index with a score of 0.639, 130th with a score of 0.456 in economic participation and opportunity, 32nd with a score of 1.000 in educational attainment, 132nd with a score of 0.961 in health and survival, and 83rd with a score of 0.139 in political empowerment.
Bahrain ranked 131st in the Global Index with a score of 0.615, 127th with a score of 0.475 in economic participation and opportunity, 84th with a score of 0.987 in educational attainment, 132nd with a score of 0.961 in health and survival, and 137th with a score of 0.037 in political empowerment. Oman ranked 133rd in the Global Index with a score of 0.612, 126th with a score of 0.483 in economic participation and opportunity, 97th with a score of 0.973 in educational attainment, 99th with a score of 0.971 in health and survival, and 142nd with a score of 0.021 in political empowerment.
Saudi Arabia ranked 141st in the Global Index with a score of 0.583, 142nd with a score of 0.328 in economic participation and opportunity, 105th with a score of 0.961 in educational attainment, 128th with a score of 0.966 in health and survival, and 121st with a score of 0.077 in political empowerment. Efforts to close gender gaps in pay and workforce participation slowed so dramatically in the past year that men and women may not reach economic equality for another 170 years, the World Economic Forum said on Tuesday.
Statistics just a year ago predicted the economic gap between genders could close in 118 years, but progress has decelerated, stalled or reversed in nations around the world, the Swiss non-profit WEF said in its annual gender gap index. “These forecasts are not foregone conclusions. Instead, they reflect the current state of progress and serve as a call to action,” Saadia Zahidi, a member of the WEF executive committee, said in a statement.
