KUWAIT, Aug 21: The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) said Thursday its Water Research Center has secured a U.S. patent for a wetland system designed to treat wastewater from sewage using reverse osmosis.
The institute said in a statement that the invention, developed by Dr. Mishari Khajah and Dr. Mohamed El-Montaser Ahmed, marks a significant step forward in protecting and managing Kuwait’s water security. The project was funded by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS).
According to KISR, the patented system treats wastewater by passing it through a fine membrane to separate salts and impurities, relying on organic plastic materials with special properties that help cut energy use and costs.
The institute noted that the innovation represents a major environmental advancement, reducing pollutants in water, strengthening water security, and supporting sustainable development goals aligned with Kuwait’s future water management and treatment plans.
