KUWAIT CITY, Nov 11: The Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) on Tuesday launched the second edition of its environmental awareness campaign, “My Day Without Plastic,” as part of its ongoing efforts to combat plastic pollution and promote sustainable living practices.
KISR Director General Dr. Faisal Al-Humaidan said in a statement that the campaign aims to reduce plastic waste, raise awareness of its environmental dangers, and encourage the use of biodegradable and eco-friendly alternatives. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with the national vision of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to reinforce the principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Dr. Al-Humaidan added that the Institute has been working for over a year to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment and public health. The campaign, he noted, builds upon the success of its first edition, launched in 2019, which helped establish a broader understanding of plastic pollution risks and the importance of reducing single-use plastics.
Head of the campaign and principal researcher in KISR’s Environment and Climate Change Program, Engineer Masouma Al-Qasimi, said the campaign’s launch, coinciding with the 63rd anniversary of Kuwait’s Constitution, reflects the country’s commitment to preserving natural resources and promoting sustainability for future generations.
Al-Qasimi stressed that protecting the environment is a shared national responsibility, adding that this year’s campaign includes community engagement programs and educational outreach to instill sustainable habits among the public.
For her part, Dr. Fatima Al-Mousawi, CEO of the Kafa’a youth platform, expressed pride in her participation, highlighting the importance of youth involvement and community cooperation in finding lasting environmental solutions.
As part of the event, Dr. Sultan Al-Salem, a researcher in KISR’s Environment and Climate Change Program, delivered a lecture titled “The Story of Plastic at the Institute,” outlining KISR’s research on converting plastic waste into alternative fuels and environmentally friendly materials.
An accompanying exhibition showcased contributions from national institutions and organizations supporting the initiative. KISR also honored participating entities for their efforts in promoting community partnerships and advancing environmental sustainability in Kuwait.
