King Pirates upset Tribal 140-135 in triple overtime – Santillan scores 39 points to claim Best Player of the Game honor

KUWAIT CITY, May 31: It took 140 points for King Pirates to come away with an important victory in the PBLK 7th Season 5’8” Division A held at the Hawally Disabled Sports Club on Friday.

In a matchup of epic proportions, King Pirates outlasted Tribal at 140-135 in triple overtime for the league’s longest game this season.

Santillan delivered 39 points for King Pirates to bring home the Best Player of the Game honors. Magbanua added 25 points, while Fajardo and Antonio chipped in with 17 points apiece for the team.

Tribal countered with impressive numbers as well, with two players scoring more than 30 points each. Player #12 finished with 35 points followed by Niegas with 32 points. James and Tacasan also made it to the scoreboard in double figures with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

If the first three quarters of the game were an indication, Tribal was more favored to win as they outscored King Pirates comfortably – only letting the other team lead by 2 points in the first quarter. Tribal led by 8 points heading into the fourth, 68-60.

The fourth quarter saw King Pirates fill the 8-point gap behind important shots by Santillan that put the game into a deadlock at the end of regulation, 95-95. Santillan scored 12 of his 39 points in this quarter.

Santillan went on to score 10 of the team’s 14 points in the first overtime. Tribal countered with 14 combined points from James, Niegas, Cutler, Briones, Cristobal, and Tacasan, to even the score at 109.

An aggressive second overtime followed with most of the points scored by both teams coming from foul shots. Santillan could only score 5 points off free throws before sitting out the rest of the game. The teams were tied at 121 heading into the third and final overtime.

With Santillan on the bench, Magbanua stepped up opening the round with two big three-pointers.  Tribal fought back with 14 points from Rosta, Niegas, and Cutler, but fell to the Magbanua-led squad in the waning seconds of the game. Magbanua went on to make 15 of the team’s 19 points in the third overtime to seal the win, 140-135.

With the victory, King Pirates maintain the eighth spot in the PBLK 7th Season 5’8” Division A standings with 11 wins and 5 losses. Tribal drops to the fifth spot with 11 wins and 4 losses.

Meanwhile, Bad Bananas picked up a win against Hashtag, 101-66, to hold on to the first spot in the 5’8” Division A standings with 13 wins and 1 loss. Hashtag dropped to #9 with 9 wins and 6 losses.

5’8” Division B saw Cabalen and Furuya each pick up a win to close eliminations. Both teams are on standby for the crossover semi-finals against Division A leaders.

The PBLK 7th Season Inter-company Division continues with FIL-ASEAK, Trampo, and Banta each nabbing a win over Kuwait Engineers, HEISCO, and Burger King B-Blades respectively.

In the 35+ Super Fathers Division, JC Nets/Bad Bananas beat Mandaragit, 101-91, to wrap up Friday’s games.
