LONDON, Nov 12, (Agencies): King Charles and Queen Camilla solemnly observed Remembrance Day, paying tribute to the fallen soldiers from Britain and the Commonwealth. In a poignant ceremony held at the Royal British Legion's annual Festival of Remembrance at Royal Albert Hall, the royal couple unveiled newly crafted statues immortalizing King Charles's late parents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
The Duke of Edinburgh, known as Prince Philip, passed away in April 2021 at the age of 99. Subsequently, Queen Elizabeth, who had reigned for an unprecedented 70 years, breathed her last in September 2022 at the age of 96. Following her demise, King Charles ascended to the throne, and the royal couple found their final resting place together at the King George VI Memorial Chapel within the grounds of Windsor Castle. Also interred at this sacred site are Queen Elizabeth's parents, King George VI, who passed away in 1952, and Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who departed in 2002. Additionally, her sister, Princess Margaret, who left the world in 2002, rests alongside them.
Remembrance Day, originating from Armistice Day, is observed on Nov 11 each year, commemorating the formal end of World War I hostilities at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
The Festival of Remembrance saw the presence of other members of the royal family, including Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Prince and Princess of Wales; Prince Edward and Sophie, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh; Princess Anne and her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence; The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and the Duke of Kent. Together, they joined King Charles and Queen Camilla in honoring the sacrifices made by those who served and remembering the significance of this solemn day.
