Kazakhstan Proposes UN-Based International Water Organization, Kuwait Reviews Initiative

KUWAIT CITY, Jun 15: KUWAIT, June 15: A proposal by the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, to establish an International Water Organization under the auspices of the United Nations was presented in Kuwait during high-level talks on energy and water cooperation.

The initiative was discussed during a meeting between Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to Kuwait, Yerzhan Yelekeyev, and Kuwait’s Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Subaih Al-Mukhaizeem.

The two sides reviewed prospects for expanding bilateral cooperation in electricity, water resource management and renewable energy, with particular emphasis on the growing strategic importance of energy and water security amid global challenges.

According to the discussions, the proposed International Water Organization aims to strengthen global cooperation in the sustainable use, management and preservation of water resources, addressing increasing concerns over water scarcity and environmental pressures.

Ambassador Yelekeyev briefed the Kuwaiti side on the objectives of the initiative, highlighting its focus on fostering international collaboration under a multilateral UN framework.

For his part, Minister Al-Mukhaizeem stressed that water security remains a top priority for Kuwait, noting the importance of ensuring long-term sustainability of water and energy infrastructure. He said Kuwait would carefully study the proposal and expressed support for international efforts to address water-related challenges.

Both sides also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the energy, water management, and renewable energy sectors, reflecting a shared interest in advancing sustainable development and technological collaboration.

The meeting underscored growing diplomatic engagement between Kuwait and Kazakhstan, particularly in strategic sectors critical to long-term environmental and energy security.
