MANILA, Philippines, Nov 29, (Agencies): Revealing a courageous battle against an uncommon type of cancer, Nam Woo Hyun (남우현) took the stage at the Miss Universe Philippines Coronation Night on May 13 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. This appearance followed a recent surgery to address his health condition.
In a statement to Korean media during the launch of his first solo album "Whitree" on Nov 28, Nam Woo-hyun shared details of his ordeal. He disclosed being diagnosed with gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), a form of cancer originating in the digestive system, often found in the stomach and small intestine.
Narrating the journey, he mentioned that a small tumor detected two years prior had grown into a 4 cm lump. Concerned about potential complications if left untreated, he opted for a significant 10-hour surgery at the end of April.
Describing the aftermath, Nam Woo-hyun recounted the shock of waking up with his abdomen split open, and facing difficulties in breathing and eating for weeks. Grateful for the unwavering support from his parents, company, and group members, he acknowledged the challenging recovery marked by a 20 cm scar on his abdomen.
Despite acknowledging changes in his singing ability and the increased difficulty of performing, Nam Woo-hyun remained resilient, expressing gratitude for the encouragement that helped him bounce back. Remarkably, he underwent a follow-up test, revealing a well-healed wound and an overall positive health status.
In a candid revelation, he admitted keeping his condition private from his fellow Infinite members, opting not to burden them. Reflecting on the decision, he acknowledged the potential impact on the group's album release but persevered, choosing to endure the challenges and continue pursuing his passion for music.
Today, Nam Woo-hyun reassures everyone of his well-being, emphasizing his commitment to regular exercise and expressing gratitude for the support that played a pivotal role in his swift recovery.
