LOS ANGELES, March 2, (Agencies): Joshua Jackson is set to join the star-studded cast of Sony Pictures’ upcoming Karate Kid, which includes Ben Wang, Jackie Chan, and Ralph Macchio. Sony Pictures revealed that the film will not only blend and advance the franchise’s mythology but also shift the story to the East Coast. The focus will be on a Chinese teen who discovers strength and purpose through martial arts under the guidance of a resilient and wise mentor.

While specific plot details are being kept under wraps, the studio disclosed that Ralph Macchio will reprise his iconic role as Daniel LaRusso from the original Karate Kid film trilogy. Macchio’s character, introduced in 1984 when he moved to California and became an unexpected karate champion mentored by Mr. Miyagi, portrayed by the late Pat Morita.

Joshua Jackson, renowned for his TV roles in Dawson’s Creek, The Affair, and the Paramount+ drama Fatal Attraction, will bring his talent to the big screen once again. He also starred in the Peacock drama Dr. Death, earning a 2022 Critics Choice Award. Notable films from his past include The Mighty Ducks trilogy, The Skulls, Gossip, and Cruel Intentions. Karate Kid, hitting theaters on Dec 13, marks Jackson’s return to film after nearly a decade since his 2015 drama, Sky.

Directed by Jonathan Entwistle and with Rob Lieber as the screenplay writer, the latest installment of Karate Kid continues a pop culture phenomenon spanning nearly three decades and grossing over $600 million worldwide. Karen Rosenfelt serves as the producer for this highly anticipated film.
