Japan has announced sanctions on three senior members of the Palestinian militant organization Hamas.

TOKYO, Dec 26: Japan has declared sanctions against three high-ranking members of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa announced on Tuesday that Tokyo would freeze the assets of these individuals and impose sanctions on payments and capital transactions. The targeted individuals, whose names were not disclosed, are suspected to have played a role in Hamas's attacks on Israel on October 7. The sanctions aim to prevent these individuals from using funds for future attacks.

This move follows Tokyo's previous imposition of sanctions in October on nine individuals and a company allegedly linked to Hamas. Japan has been navigating a delicate balance in its approach to the Gaza conflict, seeking to maintain relations with the United States, its closest ally, while also considering its ties with energy-supplying partners in the Middle East.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio condemned the October 7 attacks on Israel, urging the immediate release of Hamas captives. He expressed concern about civilian casualties and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza. Japan recently supported a United Nations General Assembly resolution advocating for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" in Gaza, having abstained from a similar vote in October.

In response to heightened risks, Japanese container shipper Ocean Network Express announced last week that it would reroute vessels away from the Red Sea to avoid potential targeting by Yemen's Houthi rebels. The Houthis, who have increased attacks on commercial shipping since the Gaza conflict began, seized a British-owned vessel chartered by Tokyo-based Nippon Yusen in November. This prompted the shipping line to halt the acceptance of cargo destined for Israel.
