LOS ANGELES, Feb 5, (Agencies): While Avatar 3 is yet to grace the theaters, James Cameron is already mapping out the future of the franchise with plans for the sixth and seventh films. The 69-year-old director shared insights into the sequels and his ongoing commitment.

“We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point,” Cameron revealed. Acknowledging the inevitability of mortality, he expressed his enjoyment and appreciation for the collaborative process, stating, “We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”

Honored with four awards at a recent ceremony, including best film direction, Cameron expressed his desire for Avatar to evolve into a long-lasting franchise akin to iconic series like Star Wars and Star Trek. “Star Trek, Star Wars, the world-building franchises that have been around since I was a kid, those were my inspirations,” he remarked. Cameron emphasized the importance of pouring heart and energy into the project, considering Avatar as a “young universe” with only two movies released and the third in progress.

Anticipated to hit theaters in 2025, Avatar 3 will be followed by Avatar 4 in 2029 and Avatar 5 in 2031. Cameron responded to questions about sticking to the same storyline, drawing parallels with creators like George Lucas and Gene Roddenberry. He highlighted the significance of maintaining a connection with the audience and questioned the wisdom of starting anew when a connection is already established.

Reflecting on the success of the first two films, which rank as the No. 1 and No. 3 highest-grossing movies of all time, Cameron expressed a belief in the inherent empathy of people. He suggested that the continued success of the franchise proves that people connect with the narrative, making a compelling case for the enduring power of storytelling.
