KUWAIT CITY, Jan 21: The head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Jahra Hospital Dr. Hanan Al-Husseini revealed that the department witnessed a qualitative leap and a remarkable development in maternal and child health clinics through the expansion of morning and evening clinics and specialized clinics. In a special interview with Al-Seyassah Daily, Dr. Al-Husseini revealed that 2,357 surgical operations were performed, including Cesarean delivery (C-section) and major, medium, and minor gynecological operations.

She explained that the activities of the 26th International Conference on Gynecology and Obstetrics will be launched in the State of Kuwait on February 8. It will continue for three days from February 8 to 10 with the participation of 20 experts and consultants from inside and outside Kuwait. The conference will discuss many important topics related to pregnancy and childbirth, maternal and fetal medicine, treatment of problems related to weak fertility in men and women, and therapeutic interventions for embryos and genetic genes. It will also provide an opportunity to learn about the latest scientific findings to improve the medical services provided to female patients, the future of embryology and genetics, and the future of robotic surgeries.

When asked about what distinguishes the conference this year, Dr. Al-Husseini responded by saying the conference will discuss the latest findings of scientists in the field of genetic and hereditary testing before pregnancy. It will also address the use of artificial intelligence for improving the quality and results of in-vitro fertilization, assisted fertilization, and embryo ultrasound, and the legal and religious perspective of artificial intelligence applications in medicine, particularly in the field of obstetrics and gynecology, with the assistance and presence of legal experts specialized in the fields of legislation.

International participation
Regarding the size of local and international participation, Dr. Al-Husseini explained that the conference is scheduled to host 20 international experts from the United Kingdom, Spain, Russia, Cyprus, India, Slovenia, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, in addition to an elite group of leading local doctors and consultants in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.

The conference includes three workshops on advanced detailed ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology, hysteroscopy and male surgeries for fertility operations. Concerning the developments in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Jahra Hospital for the year 2023, she explained that the department witnessed many achievements during the year, as it hosted visiting doctors to treat patients and hone the skills of doctors and medical staff by informing them about everything new in maternity science and research, in addition to using modern devices to diagnose and treat patients, such as the use of the latest 3D surgical laparoscopic devices, 3D and 4D sound waves, a laser device to treat women’s urinary incontinence and gynecological problems, and an electric chair device to tighten the pelvic floor muscles with high intensity electromagnetic waves.

She said, “We also held periodic meetings for the medical, technical, and nursing staff and specialized committees to conduct a self-assessment of performance on the level of service provided to patients and to evaluate the department’s protocols and treatment policies from time to time.” Regarding the maternal and child health clinics, Dr. Al-Husseini explained that the maternal and child health clinics are witnessing a qualitative shift and tremendous development in various specialties, as the number of clinics in the morning and evening periods, as well as specialized clinics, has increased.

The hospital includes a clinic for monitoring gestational diabetes, clinics for delayed childbearing, clinics for treating recurrent miscarriage, clinics for women’s laser sessions, electromagnetic chairs to strengthen the pelvis, a clinic for following up on menopausal cases, a urodynamic planning clinic, a day clinic for administering intravenous iron treatment to anemia patients, and a diagnostic colposcopy clinic. Regarding the expansion of therapeutic services which is always accompanied by the expansion of specialized surgeries, she revealed that the department witnessed about 2,357 surgical operations last year, including Cesarean delivery and major gynecological operations such as hysterectomy, ovarian cyst removal, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic infections, endometriosis, and other medium and small operations and gynecological laparoscopic operations.

In this regard, the Women’s and Maternity Emergency Department witnessed an increase in the number of examination rooms, observation rooms, fetal pulse tracing, emergency ultrasound work, and an increase in medical staff, which reduced the waiting time for patients in the emergency room and the speed of the necessary work done for them. The department organized five workshops last year, during which it performed 150 successful gynecological laparoscopic surgeries using 3D technology, which led to a reduction in the number of cases referred for treatment abroad. A total of 2,500 births were performed during the year, including 1,672 natural births and 828 Cesarean delivery.

The pain-free delivery service using an anesthetic back needle was activated at the beginning of February, and the department witnessed 455 pain-free births within ten months. It treated 5,000 cases of delayed childbearing for women and 1,000 cases of infertility for men during the year.

Meanwhile, Head of the Surgery Department at Jahra Hospital Dr. Mohammed Al- Jasmi revealed that the hospital obtained international accreditation as a center of excellence in obesity surgery from the American Surgical Evaluation Foundation, which reflects the quality of health services provided to patients. In a press statement issued yesterday, Dr. Al-Jasmi explained that the department succeeded in adhering to and obtaining international accreditation standards by establishing a committee to review and scrutinize surgical operations and learn about ways to deal with complications. It also ensured the implementation of the hospital’s requirements and infrastructure in terms of clinical capacity, type of beds, surgical operating tables, and devices, as well as the presence of highly experienced medical competencies.

The committee includes a group of consultants from various specialties, including sub- and general obesity surgery, general internal medicine, nutrition, endocrinology, and pediatric surgery, in addition to consultants in psychological and social health, and other specialties that aim to ensure the safety of patients before and after operations. Regarding the preparations that precede the operations, Dr. Al-Jasmi affirmed that many laboratory tests are conducted to ensure that the patient is free of any diseases or health problems that may hinder the operation and to work on fully preparing the patient for the operation.
