LOS ANGELES, April 8: Rapper J Cole expressed remorse for releasing a song aimed at fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar, vowing to remove the track from streaming services. The song, titled “7 Minute Drill,” served as a response to Lamar’s verse on the hit single “Like That,” where Lamar asserted his dominance in the rap game. Cole’s retaliation included remarks about Lamar “falling off like the Simpsons” and criticizing his latest album as “tragic.”

However, during an appearance at the Dreamville Festival in North Carolina on Sunday, Cole admitted feeling “terrible” about his response, describing it as “lame” and “goofy.” He expressed regret for the song, labeling it a “misstep,” and sought forgiveness from Lamar, hoping to “get back to [his] true path.”

The dispute between the two artists began with Cole’s song “First Person Shooter” last year, where he suggested he, Drake, and Lamar were the current “big three” in hip-hop. Lamar took offense to this characterization, firing back on “Like That,” asserting his dominance.

Cole revealed feeling pressured to respond after the intense reaction to Lamar’s verse, with friends and colleagues urging him to engage in a lyrical battle. Despite attempting to maintain a friendly tone, he acknowledged the result didn’t align with his values.

Praising Lamar’s talent and hoping he hadn’t offended, Cole promised to remove or update “7 Minute Drill” from streaming services. The track appears on his album “Might Delete Later.”

The decision to retract diss tracks post-release is not unprecedented in hip-hop, with Cole himself experiencing a similar situation in 2011 when veteran MC Canibus apologized for a song aimed at him. In a video, Canibus acknowledged Cole’s status as the reigning champ in hip-hop and expressed remorse for his actions, emphasizing his love for the genre.
