Italy Warns on Hormuz Crisis, Urges Israel to Halt Escalation in Lebanon

ROME, Apr 9: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stressed that the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is “critical” to maintaining global economic stability, warning that any Iranian restrictions or duties in the key shipping lane could have “unpredictable economic consequences.”

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Meloni said freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway must be fully restored and remain unrestricted, describing it as a central element of any understanding between the United States and Iran.

“Full restoration of freedom of movement in the Strait of Hormuz is needed, and it must not be subject to any restrictions,” she said, referring to recent disruptions affecting maritime traffic.

Meloni also signaled that the European Union may need to consider extraordinary economic measures if the crisis escalates further, including a potential suspension of fiscal rules under the Stability and Growth Pact—similar to steps taken during the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the regional front, the Italian leader said Rome has “repeatedly” urged Israel to halt its military escalation in Lebanon, emphasizing support for Lebanese sovereignty and the country’s efforts to disarm Hezbollah.

She also called for the protection of UN peacekeeping forces, noting Italy’s longstanding contribution to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Her remarks come after Israeli forces fired warning shots at an Italian convoy operating as part of the UN mission in southern Lebanon on Wednesday, prompting strong condemnation from the Italian government.

The statements reflect growing European concern over both maritime disruptions in the Gulf and escalating tensions along Israel’s northern front with Lebanon.
