There are at least 115,986 coronavirus cases across the US and about 1,935 deaths Saturday as the number keep rising with New York being the epicenter of the coronavirus cases.
President Donald Trump told reporters as he was leaving the White House to Norfolk, Virginia that he is considering a “short term” quarantine of New York State and surrounding areas, saying “I’d rather not do it, but we might need it”.
“Some people would like to see New York quarantined because it’s a hot spot,” Trump said. “I’m thinking about that right now, we might not have to do it, but there’s a possibility that sometime today we’ll do a quarantine, short-term, two weeks, on New York. Probably New Jersey, certain parts of Connecticut”.
He added “this would be an enforceable quarantine. And, you know, I’d rather not do it, but we may need it”.
Meanwhile, the Washington Post reported that Trump issued an order to recall some former service members to active duty “to assist in coronavirus response”.
“Decisions about which individuals may be activated are still being reviewed. Generally, these members will be persons in headquarters units and persons with high demand medical capabilities whose call-up would not adversely affect their civilian communities,” Chief Pentagon Spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement.
The statement added “this is a dynamic situation, we do not currently have a projected number of expected activations, but the Department is now fully authorized to make activations as needed”.
Trump is visiting Norfolk to see off a navy hospital ship that is heading for New York and is expected to arrive there by Monday.
