DOHA (AP), Apr 4: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited Qatar on Saturday, assuring Qatari leadership that Italy would assist in restoring gas infrastructure damaged by recent Iranian bombing, according to her office.
During talks with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, both sides discussed the strategic importance of Qatar’s natural gas output for global energy security. The Emir reaffirmed cooperation with Italy on stabilizing regional energy supplies amid ongoing conflict-related disruptions.
Meloni’s visit comes as the first by an EU, G20, and NATO leader to the Gulf region since the escalation of the U.S.–Israel war with Iran. Her two-day regional tour began in Saudi Arabia and will continue to the United Arab Emirates United Arab Emirates, with parts of the itinerary kept unannounced due to security concerns.
Both leaders also stressed the need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has reportedly been blocked for weeks amid the conflict, disrupting global oil shipments and stranding tankers.
