Israeli Strikes in Southern Lebanon as Ceasefire Strains; French UN Peacekeeper Killed

TEL AVIV (AP), Apr 18: The Israel Defense Forces said it carried out aerial and ground strikes in southern Lebanon, citing repeated ceasefire violations by militants approaching areas near Israeli troop positions. The military also впервые referenced a so-called “Yellow Line,” alleging fighters attempted to advance toward it, though the term is not part of the ceasefire agreement announced earlier this week by Donald Trump. The U.S. State Department reiterated that Israel retains the right to act in self-defense under the truce.

Tensions escalated further after senior Hezbollah official Mahmoud Qammati warned that the group would not tolerate continued Israeli strikes, signaling a tougher response compared to past confrontations.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Macron confirmed that a French soldier serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed and three others wounded in an हमला on the mission in southern Lebanon. The fallen soldier was identified as Staff Sergeant Florian Montorio. Macron said initial indications point to Hezbollah’s responsibility and called on Lebanese authorities to arrest those involved, warning that the attack underscores growing risks to international peacekeepers amid the fragile ceasefire.
