TEL AVIV, Jun 9: Israel has decided it will target Beirut’s Dahieh district in response to any Hezbollah fire directed at Israeli communities, according to a report by Ynet citing senior political-security cabinet officials.
A senior Israeli cabinet official was quoted as saying that the government had instructed the military to maintain its policy toward Hezbollah and would respond forcefully to any cross-border attacks.
“We have ordered the military to maintain the equation we set for Hezbollah, and this will be the test. For any fire intended to cross the fence, toward our communities, we will fire at Dahieh, and we'll see what Iran does,” the official said, according to the report.
The remarks suggest Israel is seeking to gauge Iran’s reaction to potential strikes on Hezbollah strongholds in Beirut’s southern suburbs, an area widely regarded as a key base of the Iran-backed group.
Ynet reported that Israeli officials noted Iran has not directly intervened on Hezbollah’s behalf despite continued Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon, including recent operations in the city of Tyre.
The comments come amid escalating tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border and broader regional uncertainty following recent hostilities involving Israel, Iran and Hezbollah.
