JERUSALEM / TEHRAN, Jun 22: Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Saturday that Israel has no intention of withdrawing from its security zone in southern Lebanon, as Iran’s Quds Force commander Esmail Qaani warned Israel of a repeat of its 2000 withdrawal if it remains in the area.
Katz said the Beaufort area remains a key part of Israel’s security deployment in southern Lebanon and is essential for protecting northern Israeli communities and Israeli forces.
“Israel has no intention of withdrawing from the Beaufort, which is an integral part of the security zone in Lebanon and essential for the defense of the Galilee settlements and IDF forces,” Katz wrote on X.
He added that the position has the full backing of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu .
The remarks come amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing disputes over Israel’s military presence in parts of southern Lebanon, a central issue in diplomatic efforts involving Lebanon, Israel, and regional powers.
Separately, Esmail Qaani , commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force , warned Israel against continuing its current policy in southern Lebanon.
“If you do not retreat from your current path in southern Lebanon, the catastrophe of 2000 will be repeated,” Qaani said in a message addressed to the Israeli military.
“Take this warning seriously and make a wise decision,” he added.
Qaani’s reference to 2000 alludes to Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon after an 18-year military presence. Hezbollah and its supporters have long portrayed that withdrawal as a major strategic victory.
The exchange highlights the growing pressure surrounding southern Lebanon, where Israeli security demands, Hezbollah’s presence, and Iranian-backed messaging continue to shape one of the region’s most sensitive flashpoints.
