BEIRUT, April 10: Israel has pledged not to target two major hospitals in Beirut following urgent talks with United Nations officials, according to the World Health Organization.

The assurance came after Israeli forces had earlier issued evacuation warnings for the Jnah area, which includes the Rafik Hariri University Hospital — the capital’s main public hospital — and Al Zahraa Hospital. WHO’s representative in Lebanon, Abdinasir Abubakar, said Israeli authorities confirmed the two facilities would not be struck as military operations against Hezbollah continue.

However, concerns remain after Israeli forces reportedly warned that ambulances could be targeted, alleging they were being used for militant purposes. The WHO said it could not independently verify those claims.

Meanwhile, residents in Beirut continue to grapple with the aftermath of heavy airstrikes. In the coastal Ain al-Mraisseh district, families sifted through debris after a strike caused part of a residential building to collapse. Despite losing homes, some survivors expressed relief that their loved ones were spared.

Authorities report that more than 300 people have been killed and over 1,800 injured in the recent escalation, underscoring the mounting humanitarian toll as the conflict intensifies.
