TEHRAN, June 28: Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said early Saturday that it had launched retaliatory strikes against US military positions across the region following American airstrikes on military targets in southern Iran.
In a statement broadcast on Iranian state television, the IRGC accused the United States of violating commitments tied to the recently announced ceasefire by carrying out attacks on Iranian coastal areas.
The elite military force said its naval units responded by targeting US military positions, describing the operation as a direct response to what it called American "aggression."
The IRGC warned that any further US attacks would trigger a "broader and stronger" military response.
It also claimed that arrangements governing navigation through the strategic Strait of Hormuz are based on understandings reached with Iran, accusing Washington of attempting to undermine those commitments through what it described as repeated provocations.
The statement came hours after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that American forces had struck Iranian missile, drone and coastal radar sites. According to the US military, the strikes were launched after Iran allegedly carried out a drone attack on a commercial vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz, an incident Washington said violated the ceasefire and threatened freedom of navigation.
The exchange of military action marks a sharp escalation in tensions despite the ceasefire agreement, raising fresh concerns over security in the Gulf and the safety of one of the world's most important maritime trade routes.
Neither side has released details of the reported strikes on US military positions or any casualties, and the claims have not been independently verified.
