NEW YORK, May 15: A federal complaint unsealed in New York has charged an Iraqi national accused of plotting multiple terror attacks across Europe and North America, including alleged plans targeting Jewish and diplomatic sites, according to US authorities.

The case, filed in federal court in Manhattan, was announced by the United States Department of Justice. Prosecutors said the defendant, identified as Mohammad Baqer Saad Dawood Al-Saadi, is accused of plotting at least 18 attacks in Europe in retaliation for US military actions in the region.

Authorities allege the planned attacks included firebombing a bank in Amsterdam in the Netherlands and stabbing attacks targeting Jewish individuals in London in the United Kingdom.

US prosecutors further allege that Al-Saadi attempted to identify and target religious and community sites in the United States, including a synagogue in New York City, as well as Jewish centers in Los Angeles and Scottsdale, Arizona, which he allegedly documented using maps and photographs provided to an undercover law enforcement officer.

The complaint also links him to alleged attacks in Canada, including a synagogue attack and a shooting near the US consulate in Toronto, though no additional details were immediately provided in the filing summary.

He faces charges including conspiracy to provide material support to Kata'ib Hezbollah and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), both designated as foreign terrorist organizations by the US government.

Additional charges include conspiracy to provide material support for acts of terrorism and conspiracy to use explosives against public places.

Al-Saadi appeared in federal court but did not enter a plea. His attorney said he denies the allegations and claims he is being persecuted due to his ties to former Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in a 2020 US drone strike in Baghdad.

According to his lawyer, Al-Saadi was arrested in Turkey and later transferred to US custody, where he is currently being held in solitary confinement at a federal detention facility in Brooklyn. He remains in custody and may seek bail at a later stage.
