KUWAIT CITY, July 28: The Criminal Court rejected the appeal filed by an Iraqi defendant and upheld the ruling issued in absentia imposing 10 years imprisonment with hard labor on him and fined him KD3 million for swindling several citizens and residents of around KD4,546,000 in a real estate scam. Case files indicate that the defendant misled his victims when he offered investment opportunities through the purchase of chalets and other real estate that were later found to be in violation of the regulations, in addition to being mortgaged in several banks, thus, causing enormous losses for the victims. The court postponed the appeal hearing for several sessions to allow the defendant to surrender, but he is still abroad and has not appeared in court till date.
Meanwhile, in another case , the Administrative Court overturned the decision of the Technical Committee at the Public Authority for Disabled Affairs (PADA) and ordered the latter to register a citizen with one blind eye as having medium visual disability, thus, granting him rights and benefits as per the law, reports Al- Seyassah daily. Attorney Awatif Sulaiman Al-Dosari, lawyer for the plaintiff, stated that the court affirmed in its ruling that blindness in one eye is a moderate visual impairment according to the law, judicial principles, and rulings of the Court of Cassation.
