Iraq seeks US exemptions to resume some Iranian flights

BAGHDAD, Sept 26: Iraq is holding direct talks with the United States to secure exemptions for some Iraqi airports from US Treasury measures affecting flights operated by Iranian airlines to regional airports, the Iraqi prime minister’s media office said on Saturday.

The proposed exemptions would allow Iranian flights to resume for humanitarian and civilian purposes, including medical treatment, education, religious visits and other essential travel, the government said.

Baghdad also called for dialogue and negotiations to ease regional tensions, warning that continued crises were making the situation increasingly complicated.

The Iraqi move comes amid growing restrictions affecting Iranian airlines and flights across the region following US measures targeting Iran’s aviation sector.
