KUWAIT CITY, Nov 3: In line with relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, Kuwait on Monday received a new batch of national property that had been confiscated by the former Iraqi regime during its 1990 invasion of Kuwait.

The official handover took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in the Diplomatic Quarter. The batch includes 400 boxes containing books and microfilm tapes belonging to Kuwait’s Ministry of Information, which were recently discovered in Iraq.

Speaking to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the sidelines of the ceremony, Assistant Foreign Minister for International Organizations, Minister Plenipotentiary Abdulaziz Al-Jarallah, expressed Kuwait’s appreciation for the cooperative efforts that led to the recovery. He commended the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for its positive and consistent role in supervising and organizing the process of returning Kuwaiti property.

Al-Jarallah reaffirmed Kuwait’s commitment to continued collaboration with Iraq and the United Nations to ensure the complete repatriation of all remaining Kuwaiti archives and assets that were seized during the occupation.

He also welcomed UN Security Council Resolution No. 2792, adopted on September 17, which calls for ongoing international engagement on the files concerning Kuwaiti prisoners and missing persons, third-country nationals, and national property — including the Kuwaiti national archives. Under the resolution, the UN Secretary-General will appoint a high-level representative to facilitate and support these ongoing efforts following the conclusion of UNAMI’s mandate.

Al-Jarallah emphasized Kuwait’s full support for the newly appointed UN representative, stressing Kuwait’s readiness to assist in fulfilling the tasks mandated by the Security Council. He also extended gratitude to Iraq for its cooperation in addressing the Kuwaiti property file, urging continued efforts to locate and recover all remaining items as stipulated under international resolutions.

For his part, Ambassador Dr. Mohammed Al-Hassan, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNAMI, described the event as a milestone in the future of Kuwaiti-Iraqi relations. Speaking to KUNA, he noted that this handover symbolizes the principles of mutual respect and cooperation that should define relations between neighboring nations.

“This marks the beginning of a new phase of cooperation between the two brotherly countries,” Al-Hassan said, adding that strong ties between Kuwait and Iraq will continue to strengthen regional stability and friendship.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Deputy Foreign Minister for Multilateral and Legal Affairs, Shorsh Saeed, affirmed that the recent delivery is not the first, nor will it be the last, emphasizing Baghdad’s determination to fully implement all relevant Security Council resolutions, including Resolutions 678 and 2107.

Saeed underlined that Iraq remains committed to addressing all outstanding matters, including the Amiri archive and the files of missing persons and prisoners, noting that joint efforts between Kuwait and Iraq have already achieved significant progress.

He added that bilateral meetings between both sides are continuing in a positive and constructive spirit, revealing that the next session of the Technical Committee on Border Demarcation is scheduled to convene shortly after the Iraqi parliamentary elections, specifically on November 16 and 17.
