BAGHDAD, Mar 22: The Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority has extended the closure of the country’s airspace to all flights for an additional 72 hours, citing ongoing security and operational concerns impacting regional air traffic.
The decision follows a series of overnight attacks targeting a U.S. diplomatic and logistics facility at Baghdad International Airport. Security officials reported that up to eight separate strikes involving rockets and drones were carried out until dawn, with some projectiles landing near the base.
Another official indicated there were at least six confirmed strikes, while a police source said a rocket launcher was later discovered in a district near the airport. Authorities have not reported casualties, as investigations and security measures continue amid heightened tensions.
