BAGHDAD, Oct 21: Iraq has closed the Sheeb border crossing with Iran to passengers, vehicles and commercial trucks until further notice, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing two sources at the crossing.
The closure was implemented for urgent security reasons, according to sources. Another source said the decision was taken to review security arrangements at the crossing.
The crossing, located in Maysan Governorate in southeastern Iraq, connects Iraq with Iran and serves passenger and commercial traffic.
Iraqi media reports said the closure took effect on Wednesday morning. Other border crossings with Iran could also be closed gradually, according to reports citing an Iraqi government source, although no detailed timetable was provided.
The Iraqi government had not publicly detailed the specific security concerns behind the closure in the reports available.
