TEHRAN, Aug 23: The US dollar reached a historic level of 2 million Iranian rials on Sunday, as the country’s currency continued its sharp decline against major foreign currencies.

The dollar had been trading at around 1.865 million rials at the beginning of last week, meaning it has gained more than 7% in less than a week. Compared with the same period last year, the dollar has more than doubled from around 958,000 rials.

The British pound also climbed above 2.7 million rials, reaching around 2.72 million, while the euro approached 2.34 million rials.

Earlier on Sunday, the dollar had been reported at around 1.98 million rials in Iran’s open market, with the pound at 2.70 million rials and the euro at approximately 2.31 million rials.

The latest figures underscore the continued pressure on Iran’s rial, with foreign currencies reaching new highs in the open market.
