TEHRAN, Nov 8 : Around eight million people in Iran have fallen into absolute poverty and malnutrition, while as many as 50 million others are struggling to afford basic necessities and meet their nutritional needs, according to the chairman of the Iranian parliament's Social Affairs Committee.
Ali Babai Karamani made the remarks on Sunday, painting a grim picture of the economic pressures facing a large section of Iran's population.
“About eight million people have fallen into absolute poverty and malnutrition, while up to 50 million others are caught in a vicious cycle of trying to secure basic goods and meet required calorie and nutrition standards,” Karamani said.
He said a family of four requires a monthly income of at least 1 billion Iranian rials to maintain what he described as a “normal life.”
“People’s economic conditions are not good. We are in a situation where people have to work one or several jobs,” he added.
The figures, if taken together, highlight the scale of economic hardship confronting households across the country, as millions struggle with the rising cost of food and other essential goods.
Iran has faced persistent economic challenges in recent years, including inflation, currency pressures and the rising cost of living, placing increasing pressure on household incomes.
