Iranian television reports huge explosion in Tehran square

TEHRAN, (AP) March 13 — A large explosion struck Tehran on Friday in Ferdowsi Square, a central location near Tehran University, Iranian state television reported. The square was crowded with demonstrators participating in the ongoing Quds Day (Jerusalem Day) rallies.

The cause of the blast has not been immediately determined, and Iranian authorities have yet to release details regarding casualties or damage. The explosion occurred shortly after warnings from Israel that it could conduct strikes in the area, though no direct link has been confirmed.

Security forces were deployed to the scene, and the situation remains under investigation as officials work to determine the source and impact of the explosion.

Earlier, Israel issued a warning on Friday for potential military strikes near Tehran University, the site of the annual Quds Day demonstrations.

The warning, circulated in Farsi, indicated that operations could take place along Enghelab Street, an area currently crowded with demonstrators. It advised residents to evacuate immediately, stating: “Your presence in these areas puts your life at risk.”

Tehran University is also the location for Friday prayers, where demonstrators are expected to gather around noon. The message from the Israeli military emphasized that operations in the area could occur “in the coming hours,” urging civilians to avoid the designated zones highlighted on accompanying maps.
