TEHRAN, Sep 5: Iran’s riyal fell to a fresh record low of around 2.25 million rials per US dollar on Saturday, extending a steep decline in the currency in recent weeks.

The rial had been trading at approximately 2.2 million per dollar earlier this week, according to market data cited in the report.

The latest fall means the currency has weakened by about 12.5% since late August, when it first crossed the 2 million-riyal mark against the dollar.

The continued depreciation is putting further pressure on Iran’s economy, raising concerns over inflation and the cost of imported goods as the rial loses value against major foreign currencies.
