TEHRAN, Jun 25: Iran has warned vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz against using routes that are not approved by its maritime authorities, saying ships outside the designated framework will not receive safety guarantees or related protections.

The Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) said vessels using unauthorized routes would not be covered by safe-passage assurances, insurance protections or liability arrangements provided under its regulations.

In a statement responding to what it described as repeated inquiries, the authority said any transit outside approved routes would be considered unauthorized, with responsibility for any consequences placed on the vessel owner, operator and captain.

The warning comes after a new maritime incident near Hormuz, in which US officials told The Wall Street Journal that Iran’s **Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted a Singapore-flagged cargo ship, damaging the vessel’s bridge but causing no casualties.

The latest development adds to growing tensions over shipping security in the strategic waterway, through which a significant portion of global energy shipments passes.
