Iranian Regime warns ships to follow Hormuz corridor as Iran unveils new control mechanism

TEHRAN, May 5: Iran has announced a new mechanism to regulate vessel transit through the Strait of Hormuz, warning that ships must adhere to designated routes or face a “firm response” from its military.

State media reported that Tehran has introduced an approved maritime corridor for commercial traffic, alongside a revised map that expands the area under Iranian control in the strategic waterway.

In a statement carried by state television, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said vessels deviating from the designated route would be considered at risk.

“We warn all vessels planning to transit the Strait of Hormuz that the only safe passage is the corridor previously announced by Iran,” the IRGC said. “Any diversion of ships to other routes is dangerous and will result in a firm response.”

Iran has also cautioned the U.S. Navy against operating in the strait and said commercial vessels must coordinate transit with Iranian authorities.

The move comes on the second day of a U.S.-led effort to facilitate commercial shipping through the vital chokepoint, following Iran’s closure of the strait amid escalating conflict linked to the U.S.-Israel confrontation.

The Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor, handles a significant share of the world’s oil shipments, making any disruption a major concern for international markets and maritime security.
