TEHRAN, Jul 12: Iran's army on Sunday called on the United States to comply with the terms of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Tehran and Washington on June 16, as military tensions continued to rise in the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to Iran's state broadcaster IRIB, Iranian army spokesman Brig. Gen. Mohammad Akraminia said US efforts to establish what he described as an "illegal route" through the strategic waterway had created insecurity in the region.

Akraminia said Iran's armed forces would "firmly" defend the rights of the Iranian people in the Strait of Hormuz and added that the military was continuously updating its "bank of targets."

His remarks came after Iran launched missile and drone attacks targeting US military bases and facilities in several Gulf states, while the United States carried out a third round of strikes against Iranian radar, missile and drone sites across southern Iran.

The United States has said its military operations were launched after Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington also said Iran had announced the closure of the strategic waterway, while US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that one sailor remained missing following attacks on commercial vessels.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said a container ship sustained damage to its stern in an incident about 9 nautical miles east of Oman, sparking a fire on board.

UKMTO said military authorities were investigating the incident. Earlier, it reported that the vessel's crew had abandoned ship and evacuated into a lifeboat while authorities continued their investigation.

The developments underscore growing security concerns in the Gulf as military exchanges between Iran and the United States continue to intensify.
