TEHRAN, May 10: Iran’s army has warned that countries complying with US sanctions against the Islamic Republic could face difficulties crossing the Strait of Hormuz, amid escalating tensions over shipping in the strategic waterway.
Mohammad Akraminia, an Iranian army official, told the state-run IRNA news agency that nations aligning with Washington’s sanctions policy against Tehran “will certainly face difficulties crossing the strait.”
The warning comes after the United States imposed new sanctions on Iranian interests earlier this month and cautioned vessels against making payments to Iranian authorities for passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, the United States and Bahrain have reportedly drafted a United Nations resolution calling on Iran to halt restrictions on maritime traffic through the vital shipping lane, which has emerged as a key flashpoint since the outbreak of war on February 28.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, carrying a significant share of global oil and gas exports.
