Iranian Regime Says No Final Understanding Reached With US, Questions Draft MoU and Naval Blockade Claims

TEHRAN, May 29: Iran has not reached a final understanding with the United States despite ongoing exchanges of messages, and will wait to see whether Washington follows through on ending what it describes as an illegal naval blockade, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said on Friday.

Speaking to state television, Baghaei said Iran continues to assess developments and stressed that no binding agreement has been concluded with Washington.

“We make our own decisions based on the interests and rights of the Iranian people,” he said, adding that Iran “said goodbye to the language of ‘must’ 47 years ago,” in response to what he described as attempts by Western powers to impose conditions on Tehran.

Baghaei also said the naval blockade referenced by the United States was illegal from the outset, describing it as both a violation of the ceasefire and a disruption to international freedom of navigation. He added that Iran would wait to see whether Washington’s stated intentions translate into action or remain “propaganda claims.”

Meanwhile, Mehdi Khanalizadeh, a state television pundit who reportedly accompanied Iran’s negotiating team in the Islamabad talks, said the draft memorandum of understanding with the United States contradicts eight of the ten conditions approved by Mojtaba Khamenei and runs counter to the Supreme National Security Council’s ceasefire position.

Khanalizadeh’s remarks suggest internal concerns within Iranian political and media circles over the compatibility of the draft terms with previously approved national guidelines.

Baghaei, however, reiterated that discussions remain ongoing but no final agreement has been reached, emphasizing that Iran will continue to evaluate developments before making any commitments.
