WASHINGTON, Jul 11: Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, said on Friday that Tehran may no longer consider itself bound by the US-Iran memorandum of understanding if Washington continues what Iran describes as violations of the agreement.
Speaking at the United Nations, Iravani said Iran remains committed to implementing the MoU "provided that the United States fully and faithfully complies with its own obligation."
"However, should the United States continue to violate its obligations under the MoU, Iran will no longer be bound to fulfill its obligations under the MoU," he said.
Iravani also said that under the Islamabad MoU, responsibility for maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, including the planning of any required demining operations, rests exclusively with Iran.
The latest escalation began after Iran launched attacks on commercial tankers linked to Qatar and Saudi Arabia off the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting widespread international condemnation and raising concerns over the security of one of the world's busiest maritime trade routes. The attacks triggered a series of retaliatory US military strikes on Iranian targets, followed by further exchanges between Tehran and Washington, pushing tensions to their highest level in years and casting doubt over the future of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding.
