TEHRAN, Jul 7: Iran has renewed its hardline rhetoric over the Strait of Hormuz, with a senior lawmaker declaring that any attempt to manage the strategic waterway without Tehran's involvement is "doomed to fail," days after the country's World Cup campaign came to an end.
Alaeddin Boroujerdi, a member of Iran's parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, said on Tuesday that the Islamic Republic had taken a high-level decision to reshape the governance of the Strait of Hormuz following the recent conflict in the region.
"Any move related to the Strait of Hormuz without coordination with Iran is doomed to fail," Boroujerdi said, adding that legislation governing how Iran manages the vital shipping lane would be introduced in parliament at the earliest opportunity.
He said all relevant state institutions would be required to implement the new policy once approved, stressing that any action taken by Tehran would be guided by Iran's national security and strategic interests.
The renewed warning comes as tensions remain high in the Gulf following recent attacks on commercial shipping and growing military threats exchanged between Iran, the United States, and Israel.
