Iranian Regime Offers Hormuz Reopening, War End Before Nuclear Deal

TEHRAN, May 2: Iran has floated a proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lift the U.S. blockade in exchange for war termination guarantees, postponing nuclear talks to a later stage, a senior Iranian official said Saturday.

Under the plan, Tehran would end its two-month shipping blockade from the Gulf, while Washington would lift restrictions on Iranian ports. Both sides would commit to no further attacks—Israel and the U.S. included—before addressing Iran's nuclear program separately.

Future negotiations would tackle sanctions relief for nuclear curbs, with Iran insisting on recognition of its right to peaceful uranium enrichment, even if suspended.

The official, speaking anonymously, said the framework delays "complicated nuclear issues" to build trust. President Donald Trump dismissed the offer Friday, stating he was "not satisfied" without elaborating.

The U.S. maintains the war—launched in February amid stalled nuclear talks—cannot end without eliminating Iran's nuclear weapon potential. Tehran insists its program is peaceful.
