TEHRAN, May 5: Iran has stopped short of confirming or denying involvement in recent attacks targeting regional interests, issuing ambiguous statements as tensions escalate in the Gulf. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned on Tuesday that both the United States and the UAE “should be wary of being dragged back into a quagmire,” in a post on X.
In similarly unclear remarks, Iranian state television quoted an unnamed military official as saying Tehran had “no plan” to target the UAE or its oil facilities. The official instead blamed what was described as “U.S. military adventurism” aimed at creating an “illegal passage,” an apparent reference to recent efforts to secure navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump cast doubt on Iran’s internal stability, claiming there was widespread confusion within its leadership. “There is tremendous infighting and confusion within their ‘leadership.’ Nobody knows who is in charge, including them,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform.
Trump also announced the cancellation of a planned envoy visit to Pakistan, which had been aimed at advancing negotiations to end the ongoing conflict, signaling further uncertainty in diplomatic efforts.
