TEHRAN, May 3: Iran has executed a political prisoner detained during the country’s protest movement, according to official and human rights sources.

State-linked outlet Mizan News Agency reported that Mehrab Abdollahzadeh was executed on Sunday morning at Urmia Central Prison. Abdollahzadeh had been arrested during the Women's Life Freedom movement, a wave of nationwide demonstrations that challenged Iran’s ruling establishment.

In a separate development, Iranian authorities executed two additional men on Saturday after the Supreme Court of Iran upheld death sentences against them on charges of spying for Israel and cooperating with the Mossad.

The executions come amid a continued surge in capital punishment cases, with reports indicating that hangings are being carried out on a near-daily basis. This is unfolding against the backdrop of a fragile ceasefire following a conflict that began on February 28.

Human rights group Kurdistan Human Rights Network said Abdollahzadeh had recently been moved to solitary confinement after a verbal altercation with a prison officer in the visitation hall at Urmia prison, days before his execution.
