TEHRAN, May 13: Iran has executed Mohammad Abbasi, who was detained during January’s nationwide protests, at dawn on Wednesday in Qezel Hesar prison in Karaj, west of Tehran, according to a report by US-based rights group HRANA.
HRANA, citing an informed source close to Abbasi’s family, said prison authorities had initially asked relatives to come for a visit but later denied them access after they arrived at the facility.
The source added that the family only learned of the execution by phone after leaving the prison.
Separately, Iran International reported last month that the Supreme Court had upheld Abbasi’s death sentence as well as a 25-year prison term for his daughter, Fatemeh Abbasi, who is currently held in the women’s ward of Evin prison.
Sources cited by Iran International alleged that both Abbasi and his daughter were subjected to severe pressure and torture during interrogations and were denied access to legal counsel throughout the judicial process, including during interrogation, investigation, trial, and Supreme Court proceedings.
