Iranian Regime Executes One More Over Protests; Human Rights Groups Protest Unfair Trial

TEHRAN (AP), Apr 6: Iran has executed another man convicted in connection with cases arising from nationwide protests that erupted in January, according to state media.

The judiciary’s Mizan news agency reported on Monday that the man, identified as Ali Fahim, was hanged after being convicted of charges including allegedly storming a military base to seize weapons. It was not immediately clear when the execution took place.

Human rights groups have strongly criticized the case. Amnesty International said Fahim and others involved were subjected to torture and ill-treatment during detention, including beatings, prolonged solitary confinement, floggings, and death threats, and were convicted in what it described as grossly unfair trials relying on forced confessions.

The Human Rights Activists News Agency had earlier reported that Fahim and others were accused of entering a Tehran base of the Basij militia, part of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, after it had been set on fire, and were coerced into giving confessions.

The case is likely to draw renewed international scrutiny over Iran’s handling of protest-related prosecutions and capital punishment.
