TEHRAN, Jun 1: Iran’s judiciary said on Monday that two Iranian protesters were executed following their arrest during nationwide demonstrations in January, according to the state-run Mizan News Agency.
The two men, identified as Mehrdad Mohammadinia and Ashkan Maleki, were convicted on charges including setting fire to a mosque in Tehran’s Gisha neighborhood, damaging public property, clashing with security forces, and blocking streets. Authorities said their death sentences had been upheld by the Supreme Court before being carried out.
Mizan also published what it described as a confession from Maleki, alleging the pair entered a mosque courtyard and ignited leaking fuel from overturned motorcycles. Human rights groups have repeatedly raised concerns over Iran’s use of forced confessions and expedited trials in politically sensitive cases.
