PARIS, July 20: France has accused Iran of detaining two members of its embassy staff for several hours and assaulting one of them, describing the incident as a serious breach of diplomatic immunity.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said the two diplomats were held and questioned by Iranian security services on Sunday evening before being released and allowed to return to the French embassy. He said both staff members were safe and expected to return to France in the coming hours.
According to Barrot, the officials were involved in French programs supporting Iranian civil society, particularly artists and scientists.
Condemning the incident as "extremely serious and unacceptable," Barrot said he had informed Iran's foreign minister that the violation of the diplomats' integrity and immunity "cannot go without consequences," signaling that France may take further diplomatic action.
