TEHRAN, Apr 18: Iran has declared the Strait of Hormuz fully closed, escalating tensions in one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes, according to state media.
The naval arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it has expanded the closure to include the corridor previously designated for safe passage, effectively halting all maritime traffic through the strait. The move comes in response to what Tehran describes as a blockade imposed by the United States Navy on Iranian ports and shipping.
In a statement late Saturday, Iranian authorities warned that any vessel attempting to transit the waterway in violation of the closure would be targeted. This marks a shift from Friday, when Iran had allowed limited passage under coordination and toll arrangements.
Iran maintains that the U.S. blockade violates the ceasefire between the two sides. Earlier on Saturday, two vessels were reportedly attacked in and around the strait, including at least one incident involving Iranian gunboats near the coast of Oman.
The development raises concerns over global energy supplies and maritime security, as the strait is a key route for a significant share of the world’s oil shipments.
