TEHRAN, May 5: Iran on Tuesday accused the United States of killing civilians in attacks on boats in regional waters, rejecting US claims that its forces had targeted Iranian military vessels.
State television, via its Telegram channel, said US forces “attacked two small boats carrying people,” adding that five civilian passengers were killed and that Washington “must be held accountable for their crime.”
The accusation came after a US admiral said American forces had sunk six small Iranian vessels. Tehran denied that any of its combat boats were hit.
Tasnim News, affiliated with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, cited a military source as saying the targeted vessels were civilian boats transporting goods from Khasab in Oman toward Iran.
The source dismissed US claims of striking Iranian speedboats as “false,” insisting that no Revolutionary Guards naval assets were involved.
Iranian officials warned that the United States would be held responsible for what they described as the killing of civilians, as tensions continue to rise in strategically sensitive regional waterways.
