TEHRAN, Jun 1: Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has criticized the European Union for condemning Iran’s recent military response to US attacks, calling the bloc’s position “hypocritical” and a “masterclass in selective moral outrage.”
In a statement posted on social media platform X on Monday, Baghaei said Iran’s actions were a “legitimate exercise of self-defense” under international law. He accused the EU of applying double standards by criticising Tehran while ignoring what he described as unlawful US-Israeli military actions against Iran.
Baghaei said the EU should remain committed to the UN Charter and the rule of law, adding that it should “stop appeasing aggressors while blaming those who respond to unlawful attacks.” He also stated that Iran’s strikes targeted bases and assets used to launch attacks against the country, which he said made the response legally justified.
He further argued that states have a legal obligation not to allow their territory or facilities to be used for attacks on other countries.
