NEW DELHI, Sept 12: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Saturday that Iran is “not at war” with Saudi Arabia, distancing Tehran from the confrontation between the kingdom and the Iran-backed Houthis as tensions rise following a drone attack on Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline.
“We are not at war with Saudi Arabia. The Houthis have their own issues,” Pezeshkian told India Today TV on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi.
Pezeshkian called on countries across the region to work together to restore peace and security.
“I have repeatedly said that all the countries of the region should sit down together and establish peace and security in the region,” he said, adding that there was “no logic or reason” for the countries to be at war or in conflict with one another.
His comments came amid heightened tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia following Houthi attacks on Saudi territory and a separate drone strike targeting the kingdom’s East-West oil pipeline.
Iraq investigates suspected drone launch sites
Meanwhile, Iraqi security forces searching for those behind the Saudi pipeline attack have discovered traces of explosives and suspected drone launch sites near the Iranian border, according to security sources.
A security source told Al Jazeera that traces of explosives indicating drones may have been launched were found near the Duwayrij River in the Jazirat al-Tayyib area of Maysan province.
AFP separately reported that security forces had found drone launchers in the remote Al-Tib area of Maysan, close to the Iranian border.
The discoveries came after Iraqi and Saudi authorities said drones used to attack Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline were launched from Iraqi territory.
Iran-backed Iraqi armed groups have denied involvement. The groups said they would have been “proud” to carry out such an attack but had not done so.
No group has claimed responsibility for the pipeline attack.
