Iranian President Pezeshkian Reportedly Resigns Amid Power Struggle with Iran's Revolutionary Guard

TEHRAN, May 31: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has reportedly submitted an official letter of resignation to the Office of the Supreme Leader, according to a source familiar with the matter cited by Iran International.

In the letter sent on Sunday, Pezeshkian said the president and government have been effectively excluded from key national decision-making processes, adding that the resulting power vacuum has allowed hardline factions within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to assume greater control over state affairs, the source said.

He reportedly stated that under the current circumstances, he is unable to fulfill his constitutional duties and has therefore requested to step down immediately.

It remains unclear whether the resignation will be accepted, while the development signals a deepening rift within Iran’s political establishment.

The report comes amid months of reported tensions between the civilian government and Iran’s military-security institutions, with earlier accounts suggesting the IRGC has gradually expanded its influence over key areas of governance, contributing to a political and administrative deadlock that has hampered policy implementation and reforms.
